Most of us have fantasies we do not say out loud.
Not because they are wrong.
Not because they mean something terrible about us.
But because fantasies are rarely polite.
They do not arrive wearing sensible shoes and a name tag. They do not care what you think should turn you on. They do not ask whether they fit your politics, your self-image, your relationship style, or the version of yourself you present to the world.
They simply appear.
A flicker.
A scene.
A feeling.
A dangerous little image at the edge of the mind.
And then many of us do the same thing.
We shove it back into the drawer.
We pretend we did not see it.
We decide it must not matter.
But your fantasies may know something about your desire that your conscious mind has not yet found the courage to admit.
Not literally, perhaps.
But symbolically.
And that is where things get interesting.
Because a fantasy is not always an instruction manual.
It is not necessarily a request.
It is not always something you want to happen in real life, in real time, with real consequences.
Sometimes a fantasy is a poem the body writes in the dark.
A dream with its hands on your hips.
A symbol.
A clue.
A doorway.
The mistake many people make is thinking they have to take the fantasy at face value. They look at the surface of it and think, Well, that can’t possibly be me.
Maybe the fantasy is too wild.
Too submissive.
Too dominant.
Too forbidden.
Too needy.
Too vain.
Too much.
So they reject the whole thing.
But the deeper question is not always, “Do I want this exact scene to happen?”
The deeper question is, “What feeling does this fantasy give me?”
That is where the gold is.
Take a fantasy about being ravished by a mysterious stranger.
On the surface, it might look alarming. It might not resemble your real values at all. It might involve danger, darkness, pursuit, surrender, helplessness, things you would never want outside the protected theatre of imagination.
But beneath the scene, there may be another current moving.
Maybe the fantasy is not really about danger.
Maybe it is about being wanted so intensely that you do not have to audition for desire.
Maybe it is about surrendering control.
Maybe it is about not having to manage the moment, initiate the moment, explain the moment, or be responsible for everyone’s feelings inside the moment.
Maybe some part of you longs to stop being competent for one blessed hour.
To stop being the planner.
The peacekeeper.
The good girl.
The responsible one.
The one who knows where the batteries are, what time the appointment is, and whether there is milk in the fridge.
Maybe she wants to be claimed.
Not harmed.
Not disrespected.
Not truly unsafe.
Claimed.
There is a world of difference.
And that difference is where conscious intimacy lives.
Because you do not need your partner to put on a balaclava and clamber through the bedroom window at 2 a.m. like some deeply confused erotic raccoon.
You might simply need to say:
“I want you to take the lead tonight.”
“I want to feel pursued.”
“I want to surrender, but only inside something we both agree to.”
“I want to feel like you cannot wait to touch me.”
Now the fantasy has become useful.
It has been translated.
The letter has softened into the spirit.
And the spirit can be shared.
This applies to so many fantasies.
A fantasy about being worshipped may not mean you need rose petals, chanting, and someone kneeling dramatically beside the bed.
Though, honestly, do not underestimate ambience.
It may mean you want to feel adored.
Seen.
Treasured.
Like your body is not a problem to solve, but a landscape to explore.
A fantasy about being watched may not mean you want an audience. It may mean you want to be witnessed. You want your pleasure to matter. You want someone’s eyes on you without judgment, without rushing, without that little flicker of self-consciousness that makes you leave your own body.
A fantasy about dominance may not mean cruelty.
It may mean certainty.
Containment.
Trust.
The delicious relief of someone else holding the shape of the moment so you can melt inside it.
A fantasy about being bold, shameless, or irresistibly seductive may not mean you want to become someone else.
It may mean there is a part of you already waiting to be invited forward.
She has been patient.
But she is not gone.
Our fantasies often exaggerate because the body speaks in theatre.
It uses masks.
Costumes.
Storm clouds.
Locked doors.
Silk ropes.
Forbidden rooms.
It turns the volume up because subtlety is not always enough to get our attention.
That does not make the fantasy wrong.
It makes it symbolic.
The real work is not to judge the fantasy.
The real work is to listen.
Gently.
Curiously.
Without immediately deciding what it means.
You might ask yourself:
What part of this fantasy excites me most?
Is it the setting?
The power dynamic?
The feeling of being chosen?
The feeling of being free?
The feeling of being taken care of?
The feeling of being irresistible?
The feeling of not having to ask?
Who do I get to be in this fantasy?
What do I get to stop carrying?
What do I finally get to receive?
These questions can reveal far more than the fantasy itself.
And once you understand the emotional flavour, you can begin to bring it into your love life in ways that are safe, consensual, and beautifully alive.
That last part matters.
Consent is not the boring paperwork before the passion.
Consent is the sacred container that lets passion become honest.
It is what allows surrender to feel like surrender instead of fear.
It is what allows intensity to become erotic instead of unsafe.
It is what turns fantasy from a secret into a shared language.
You do not have to share every detail with your partner.
Some fantasies can remain private. Some are meant to live only in the lush, strange garden of the imagination. You are allowed to have an inner erotic life that belongs only to you.
But when a fantasy keeps returning, when it glows, when it tugs at your sleeve and says, Look closer, it may be worth asking what desire is hiding inside it.
Maybe you want more tenderness.
Maybe more hunger.
Maybe more play.
Maybe more reverence.
Maybe you want to be touched slowly.
Or firmly.
Or with more confidence.
Maybe you want to be invited into your body instead of dragged through another routine.
Maybe you want the room to feel less like a negotiation and more like a spell.
Your fantasies are not something to fear.
They are not proof that you are too much.
They are not evidence against your goodness.
They are lanterns.
Some are soft.
Some are strange.
Some wear leather boots and knock at midnight.
But if you listen beneath the costume, beneath the drama, beneath the forbidden little thrill, you may discover something tender and true.
A longing.
A need.
A hunger.
A hidden doorway back into your own body.
And perhaps, if you are brave enough to follow the whisper, back into deeper intimacy with the one who loves touching you there.
